ANALOG FILM WORKSHOP

Writer's picture: Amy F. DochertyAmy F. Docherty

Working out of a base in the collaborative studio space at the New Bridge Project in Gateshead, artist Leah Millar, a mix of techniques such as contact printing on paper, 16mm film and direct animation/structural film.

Contact Printing

Analog process using light sensitive paper and developing/fixing chemicals alongside found items such as biological materials (leaves, petals, bark and seeds etc) from the Comfrey Project and semi-translucent items.

Architectural Installation for Coatsworth Road

As a small break away group, we considered from an architectural perspective how we could add a pavilion or installation to Coatsworth Road which could enhance the community cohesion of the area and encourage the Comfrey Project to interact with the road itself more.

Lunch

A shared lunch with artists in residence at the New Bridge Project, members of the Gathering charette group and another charente group who have been working on a sound piece based around Gateshead high streets which will be exhibited in the same space as our photographic installations on Friday.

Planning the Exhibition Installation

Considering space, forms and mediums, the group discussed how we envisaged our exhibition installation space. The group discussed, sketched and finalised our design of the installation output to begin printing images, setting up projections and building the installation tomorrow.

Direct Animation/Structural Film

Using 16mm analog film, the process involved layering biological matter (leaves, petals and seeds etc) over the film before cutting and splicing the strips of film into a continuous loop which could be run through an analog projector to create a short film for Friday's exhibition. Myself, Arron and Emilie created the following film using the technique.
