ASSEMBLAGE PRIMER PROJECT

Writer's picture: Amy F. DochertyAmy F. Docherty

Introduction meeting to the primer project included introductions to product anatomy as well assemblages with the challenge of representing the spaces in-between components.

“The quality of having an inside is almost anthropomorphic…

creating the uncanny sense of sharing the space with another person.”

Robert Fried, 1967

part one :

select an artefact or assemblage which has personal meaning for you

Document this/ these:

the components

their relationship to one another

(or perhaps the spaces between them)

… precisely and beautifully

part two:

write three descriptions:

- a physical description

e.g. material, form, manufacturing process, etc.

- its ‘value’

e.g. use vs. exchange value; symbolism, or personal meaning

- its relational or associational connections

e.g. physical or social relationship to other components in the artefact/ assemblage; where do the materials come from and how are they produced; narratives, archetypes, history, etc.
