CASTING THE FORMWORK

Writer's picture: Amy F. DochertyAmy F. Docherty

I spent a few hours casting several parts of the material areas in the formwork I'd built in the workshop on Monday. The first section was filled with plaster, with some paper etc to pad out the area without adding extra weight. This was to consider the plaster used in Richard's contribution tile to ensure a continuity between them as well as linking to previous experiments I had undertaken using plaster to mark traces of use by varied religions.

The second space was then filled with melted down bars of soap. This new material choice in my work was influenced by Polish artist Mirosław Bałka who regularly uses the material to represent spirituality, cleanliness and the symbolism of life and death, most prominently in his work Soap Corridor. This was also representative of the studies I had undertaken into ablutions and cleanliness in religious spaces.
