CLAY ABLUTIONS VESSEL

Writer's picture: Amy F. DochertyAmy F. Docherty

Having spoken about clay being a low 'quality' material according to the western hierarchy of materials as spoken about by Gormley in the Materiality reader, I decided to create a vessel from clay for ablutions. As the ablutions are a religious ritual which is important in most religions, the use of clay as an inverted material to carry out an important theological act gives the material a new level of importance, something that the artefact wishes to symbolically address.

(UPDATE: Unfortunately, by Monday morning, the clay had shrank whilst drying and cracked beyond repair. Below is the result:)
