Defensive Architecture

From the beginning of progressive settlements, humankind has examples of defensive systems for protection of their land, people and goods. These systems are, in principle, the shaping of a settlement or development to provide defence through the application of a range of elements.

In the history of humankind, from the prehistoric times until the end of the Middle Ages, the following defensive systems were developed to provide protection to a settlement: its positioning and the provision of the following, in order of conception: the wall, the recess, the tower, the flanking tower and the round, low bastion. Each defence provides differing levels of protection and can be understood as an iterative process which developed alongside technological advances in weaponry.
