Having received the Mezuzah I ordered in the post, I decided this morning to create a negative mould of it by using the silicone putty I had left over from previous castings. I decided to complete my idea of casting a plaster version of the Mezuzah to record the fingerprints and traces of human activity left on it. I also decided to cast a plaster version of the hinge mould I had previously made to see whether this would be as successful as the wax casting or less.
The Folly - Phyllida Barlow
Whilst I was waiting for the cast to dry, I further researched the works of Phyllida Barlow specifically her sculptural work for the British pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale entitled The Folly. This threw up a lot of interesting thoughts on the use of materials to create forms which can be perceived to take on the material qualities of different materials, such as columns created from polystyrene and modroc painted to resemble stonework. Further notes on the works are below:
Drawn From Life - Marc Quinn
I also spent some time reading into Marc Quinn's work Drawn From Life which was commissioned for Sir John Soane's Museum. The 12 sculptures created for the piece were made from fibreglass to capture an 'uncanny realism' of the human form. The pieces, fragmented and ambiguous, were designed with the museum in mind to ensure their forms, scales and classical traditions would be in keeping with the spaces when bathed in the same light yet allow the pieces stand out in a very powerful way, dependant on their context.
