Manual for Deconstruction

Writer's picture: Amy F. DochertyAmy F. Docherty

Following on from yesterdays discovery of teardown reports and their images' similarities to Todd McEllan's Things Come Apart series, I began looking into manuals for construction such as flat pack furniture instructions to work backwards from to create my own manual for deconstruction.

Instruction Manuals

Whilst some instruction manuals can be confusing to those of varying levels of knowledge and skill in building, IKEA manuals allow for affordable design to be easily accessible to speakers of all languages, any level and any skill. '...what the process does accomplish merits astonishment. Each tool and part is enumerated. Each step is isolated and requires a kind of mindfulness to do one thing at a time. Right and wrong are charmingly illustrated with line-drawn figures. And all of this — whether for a 4- or a 400-part piece — is done without a single letter of type.' (Danzico, 2017).
