MATERIAL DEFORMATION

Writer's picture: Amy F. DochertyAmy F. Docherty

Having spent a few days working independently, Richard and I had a discussion to try to understand the direction in which our experiments were taking us. I referred again to the wax poured handle experiments and how I wished to track the traces of use of it through creating a video. The handle was in some ways the manifestation of a precursor to the ideas of material deformation.

The handle acted as a stepping stone from movements of people on the site and the microrituals of thresholds to materiality and material qualities. This questioning of what happens if a door handle is turned from solid, cold steel into warm, malleable, translucent wax lead to theorising that the touch of a human would alter the matter, deforming the materials natural properties to record the traces of use.
