Having filmed a short video with the wax poured handle and further researched Materiality, I was intrigued by the idea of changing the type of material an object is made from, and therefore the qualities of the object, and the way in which this can help to identify and exhibit traces of use.
For example, a Mezuzah (Jewish prayer box placed on a door frame and touched each time an Orthodox Jewish person passes it) made of plaster could record the fingerprints or marks of touch on it which would not usually be visible on the usual plastic Mezuzah.
To experiment further with this, I have taken some time to research mould making and casting. The beginnings of these experiments are as below:
Having created negative moulds of hinges, I then remelted wax from the melted wax handle study to pour several iterations of the wax hinges to develop my skills with this process. Below are images of the process and the 6 iterations.
