Scanning Sites for Sound

Following research into those with blindness or visual impairments and the more specific research into The vOICe software which creates artificial synthesia to aid those who are blind with visualising space/objects, I decided to create sound scans of the sites for the sound installations to allow for the sound pieces to be site specific.

Below are the sounds recorded digitally and placed in a video alongside the images of the place that the sound 'represents'.

Sony TCM200DV Cassette Recorder

To create analog recordings of the scans I opened the application on my phone to rotate the view to create a varied scan sound and a handheld portable cassette recorder with a built in microphone. The Sony TCM200DV cassette recorder uses an inbuilt play/record track which can record at two separate speeds to create normal playback speed or a double speed playback. Currently I've been using the normal playback speed recording and will manipulate the tape itself to speed up the recording manually and through digital mastering.
