The Culture Shock

The first ever UK live music census has found that Britain’s small venues are facing significant difficulties due to increased business rates and property development. Increased business rates had an “extreme, strong or moderate” effect in the last year on 33% of the 200 venues surveyed, and 40% of small venues. Within the Ouseburn Valley, this proportion is significantly increased, with multiple venues already moving out of the valley due to developers buying out the spaces they currently inhabit, or permission being granted for residential developments to be built in extremely close proximity to existing music venues, public houses and cultural spaces which then leads to noise complaints, and reduced hours for venues to allow live music.
