Celebrating 100 years of council housing, the This Is Byker event at Tyne Bank Brewery in Byker included a screening of seminal documentation 'Byker' by Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen of the community of terraced streets in Newcastle’s East End, demolished to make way for Ralph Erskine designed Byker Wall Estate in the 1970s.

A talk by artist and local resident of Byker Wall Steve Sheraton looked into the history of the estate, the ideas behind its design, the work of Ralph Erskine, the social and architectural significance of the Grade II listed and UNESCO twentieth century building of outstanding merit, the relevance of the estate as it reaches 50 and what the future could hold over the next 50 years.

Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen's second film of the evening 'Today I'm With You' follows Konttinen on her return to the Byker Wall Estate in 2005 as she asks residents to imagine their lives in 'just one picture' to paint a collaborative portrait of the estate and the diverse communities who live there. This is Byker: Local resident and artist Steve Sheraton's talk will look at the history of the estate, the ideas behind its design, the work of Ralph Erskine, the social and architectural sginificance of the Grade II listed and UNESCO twentieth century building of outstanding merit, the relevance of the estate as it reaches 50 and what the future could hold over the next 50 years.
