Reflective Text

Combining the previous week’s analytical site mapping of Coatsworth Road from the perspective of emotional and physical borders; religions and rituals; and street names, our group were quick to engage with each other on ideas of the perception of the street and community as both an outsider and an insider. The external perspective is that of a chaotic street, where buildings of varied uses, religious affiliations and users are (dis)organised along one street. However, it isn’t until you begin to understand the inner workings of the street and are able to view first hand how such varied communities can cohabit an area in perfect harmony that the perceived chaos is seen for the organisation that it really is.

When considering these concepts as an assemblage, we were quick to draw upon the references of birds in flight. Often spotted on the roof of an empty shop adjacent to the bus stop, birds gather and fly across the skies of the street in fluid masses, choreographing their movements to avoid collision. The birds in formation in the assemblage depict the way that the communities interact, and the way in which perspective can alter views of a place.

The projection of a 4-minute looped film onto the assemblage is an amalgamation of the ideas which were first introduced by each group member’s site analysis. Religions and rituals, road and street names, and physical and emotional borders are all represented in the clips, taken on site in a one-hour period.

Tutorial Notes

What's next...?

The group are going to work into our individual interests initially to develop further our own strands of narrative. Using the base of the group model and the dimensions of it to create individual 'segment' models, we will then be able to create an assemblage which in its cross sections, creates a biotopic narrative.
