VISITING THE MERZ BARN WALL

After taking inspiration from the Merz process and discussing at length the Elterwater Merz Barn Wall alongside the work of Schwitterz in general, I decided to visit the Merz Barn Wall at the Hatton Gallery on Newcastle University campus. The wall itself became of great interest to me, and I was particularly interested in knowing more about the lengths that were taken to remove the wall from its original context in Elterwater, the Lake District. This also made me question further the impact that the wall has in the gallery setting; as a context driven piece, the wall embodied its original location but is now removed from this. This changes the dynamics of the piece significantly, altering the final vision and viewing of the piece in its current site.
